You put on your favourite ring or bracelet, and suddenly notice a green mark on your skin. Why does this happen? Does it mean your jewellery is poor quality? Here's what causes green discolouration, how to reduce it and why choosing the right material matters.
Why does some jewellery turn your skin green?
Green marks usually appear when certain metals react with moisture, sweat, oxygen or substances on your skin. Copper-containing jewellery is a common cause. As copper reacts, compounds can form and transfer onto the skin.
A green mark does not automatically mean your jewellery is harmful. It is often a superficial stain that can be washed away with mild soap and water. If you experience itching, redness or irritation, remove the jewellery.
Which jewellery is more likely to leave green marks?
Copper, brass and some inexpensive metal alloys are more likely to cause green discolouration, particularly if their protective plating wears away. Sweat, moisture, perfume and skincare products can make these reactions more noticeable.
Can stainless steel jewellery turn your skin green?
Stainless steel is generally much more resistant to corrosion than copper or brass. Green staining is therefore uncommon with well-finished stainless steel jewellery.
At DLN Jewellery, our collections feature two grades of stainless steel:
Essentials · 304 Stainless Steel
An accessible choice for beautiful everyday jewellery. Grade 304 is corrosion-resistant, although it can be more susceptible to corrosion than 316L in certain demanding conditions.
Premium · 316L Stainless Steel
Grade 316L offers enhanced resistance to certain forms of corrosion, partly thanks to its molybdenum content. It is a lovely option for jewellery designed to stay beautiful with proper care.
Neither material is completely maintenance-free, but both offer advantages over many copper-based jewellery alloys.

What about gold-coloured jewellery?
Gold-coloured jewellery often has a coating over a base metal. How well it lasts depends on the base material, the coating and how the piece is cared for.
Some of our pieces feature an 18K Gold PVD coating. PVD is a process that deposits a thin layer onto the metal. A well-applied PVD finish can be more wear-resistant than certain traditional plating methods, although friction, chemicals and heavy use can still affect it over time.

5 ways to help prevent green marks
- Choose your materials carefully. Stainless steel is generally less likely to leave green marks than copper-based metals.
- Let perfume and lotion dry first. This helps limit contact with substances that may affect jewellery finishes.
- Dry your jewellery after exposure to water. Chlorine, salt and lingering moisture may affect the finish over time.
- Clean your pieces gently. Use a soft cloth and, where appropriate, lukewarm water with mild soap.
- Store jewellery separately in a dry place. This reduces scratches, friction and unnecessary moisture exposure.

Frequently asked questions
Is a green mark from a ring dangerous?
Usually not. It is often caused by a surface reaction between the metal and substances on your skin. If irritation, itching or a rash develops, stop wearing the piece.
Can stainless steel rings turn your finger green?
This is uncommon with well-finished stainless steel, but coatings, additional materials and wearing conditions can all make a difference.
Is 304 or 316L stainless steel better?
Both are corrosion-resistant stainless steel grades. Grade 316L generally performs better in certain aggressive environments, while 304 can be a good everyday option. You can also read our guide to showering with stainless steel jewellery.
