Your favourite necklace, the ring you never take off, or the bracelet you wear every single day. Some jewellery pieces simply become part of your everyday look. But what happens when you step into the shower?
Can you really shower with stainless steel jewellery? The short answer is: generally, yes. However, the type of stainless steel, its finish and how you care for it all make a difference.
At DLN Jewellery, we believe beautiful jewellery should fit into everyday life. Here's everything you need to know about water resistance, 304 and 316L stainless steel, and gold-coloured coatings.
Is stainless steel jewellery waterproof?
Stainless steel is naturally resistant to water and corrosion, making it a popular material for jewellery designed for regular wear.
However, water-resistant doesn't mean maintenance-free. Shampoo, soap, chlorine, salt water and harsh cleaning products can gradually affect the appearance of jewellery, particularly pieces with gold-coloured coatings.
DLN TIP
Got your jewellery wet? Don't worry. Gently rinse away any product residue and dry your jewellery with a soft cloth.
304 vs 316L stainless steel: what's the difference?
Not all stainless steel jewellery is made from the same grade of steel. At DLN Jewellery, you'll find two collections, each with its own characteristics.
DLN ESSENTIALS
304 Stainless Steel
Beautiful, affordable jewellery designed to make everyday styling effortless.
304 stainless steel offers good resistance to normal water exposure and everyday wear. Compared with 316L, it generally provides less corrosion resistance, particularly in environments containing salt and chlorides.
Perfect for: trendy pieces, statement jewellery and affordable everyday styling.
DLN PREMIUM
316L Stainless Steel
Looking for jewellery designed for regular wear?
316L stainless steel contains molybdenum, which helps improve its resistance to certain forms of corrosion. This makes it a popular choice for durable everyday jewellery.
316L is also often well tolerated by people with sensitive skin, although individual metal sensitivities can vary.
Perfect for: timeless basics, everyday favourites and frequent wear.

Many gold-coloured stainless steel pieces can tolerate occasional contact with water. However, the finish plays an important role.
Some jewellery features a PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) coating, a process that can create a durable finish when applied correctly.
Even PVD coatings can gradually wear due to friction, chemical exposure and intensive use. That's why we recommend being careful with perfume, shampoo, chlorine and cleaning products.
What about swimming?
Showering and swimming aren't quite the same thing. The environment in which you wear your jewellery matters.
Fresh water
Generally less demanding on stainless steel than salt water or heavily chlorinated water.
Swimming pools
Chlorine and other pool chemicals can gradually affect jewellery finishes.
Sea water
Salt water may accelerate corrosion and wear on certain coatings.
To help preserve the appearance of your jewellery for as long as possible, we recommend removing it before swimming, particularly gold-coloured pieces.
5 simple ways to keep your jewellery beautiful
- Dry after contact with water. Gently pat your jewellery dry with a soft cloth.
- Avoid harsh chemicals. Keep perfume, chlorine and cleaning products away from your pieces.
- Clean gently. Use a soft cloth and, when appropriate, lukewarm water with mild soap.
- Store carefully. Keep your jewellery clean and dry, ideally separated to prevent scratches.
- Pay attention to coatings. Gold-coloured finishes may need extra care to maintain their appearance.

Our recommendation: stainless steel jewellery is a practical choice for everyday wear, but removing it before showering is still the safest option if you want to preserve its finish for as long as possible.
If you occasionally forget, there's usually no reason to worry. Simply remove any product residue and gently dry your jewellery.
